Edgar Jansen is op jonge leeftijd met tekenen en schilderen begonnen. Sinds zijn opleiding aan de Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten werkt Edgar als portretschilder in Amsterdam. Hij maakt portretten, o.a. kinderportretten, in opdracht. Hij vervaardigt deze in diverse technieken: pastel, aquarel, olieverf, en zwart-wit (potlood, krijt, inkt) en, gemengde technieken.

Zijn stijl kenmerkt zich door vloeiende lijnen, subtiele kleuren en een terloopse directheid. Als een ware impressionist werkt hij bij voorkeur naar de waarneming ter plaatse. Voor zijn goed gelijkende portretten maakt hij geen gebruik van fotomateriaal, maar deze zijn het resultaat van poseersessies.

Edgars werk bestaat voor een groot deel uit tekeningen van musici en dansers die hij vastlegt tijdens concerten, voorstellingen, repetities en jamsessies. Met zijn losse manier van werken weet hij de vrijheid van de beweging te suggereren en het karakter van de muziek en de dans uit te drukken. Edgar laat zich inspireren door verschillende dansstijlen: ballet, moderne dans, flamenco, tango, butoh, Afrikaanse en oriëntaalse dans, contact-improvisatie, hoela hoep, en door uiteenlopende muziekgenres: wereldmuziek, klassieke- en populaire muziek (pop, jazz). Op deze website worden tevens series van violisten en zangers getoond.

Andere thema’s in zijn werk zijn het landschap, het naaktmodel, dieren (o.a. paarden), daklozen, cafe's en interieurs. Uitgebreide reizen door India resulteerden in tal van getekende impressies. In Israël heeft hij schetsen van het chassidische leven gemaakt.

Zijn kunst wordt toegepast als illustraties voor affiches, programma’s, cd-covers en websites. Het werk van Edgar wordt regelmatig geëxposeerd. Hij geeft ook portretcursussen en workshops ‘tekenen van dans en beweging’.

Edgar Jansen started drawing and painting at an early age. Since his study at the State Academy of Fine Arts Edgar has lived in Amsterdam, Holland, where he works as a portrait painter. He does portraits in commission, including children's portraits. For his portraiture Edgar uses a variety of techniques: pastel, water colour, oil paint, black & white (pencil, chalk, ink), and mixed media.

Edgar’s style is characterized by flowing lines, subtle colours and a certain casual directness. As a true impressionist, Edgar likes to work by direct observation on the spot. For his portraiture no photography is used; his true-to-life portraits are the result of modelling sessions.

Much of his work is dedicated to capturing musicians and dancers during concerts, performances, rehearsals and jam sessions. By his loose way of drawing and painting, Edgar is able to suggest the freedom of movement and express the character of the music and dance. He finds his inspiration in different dance styles: ballet, modern dance, flamenco, tango, butoh, african and oriental dance, contact improvisation, hoola hoop, as well as in various music styles: world music, classical and popular music (pop, jazz). Other themes of his art include landscapes, nudes, animals (e.g. horses), homeless, cafés and interiors. Extensive touring throughout India resulted in numerous travel impressions. In Israel he sketched the Chassidic life.

Edgar’s art is being used for illustrations of cd covers, posters and web sites. His work is frequently exhibited. He also teaches portraiture and gives workshops in “drawing dance & movement”.

Edgar Jansen is teaching portraiture in the technique of pastel. The intensive course is at a advanced level. It is focused on how to make a portrait and it explores the subtle technique of pastel which is particularly suitable for portraiture. Professional models are invited. The lesson consists of an introduction, two portrait sessions and a general discussion afterwards. The aim is let all the students develop their own drawing style.

Voor zwart-wit portretten gebruikt Edgar ook Siberisch krijt (Conté à Paris) op 50x 65 cm formaat. Dit is samengeperste houtskool dat zwarter en minder vluchtig is dan houtskool. Pastel. Pastels zijn met de hand gerolde staafjes puur pigment, vermengd met pijpaarde en arabische gom. Met dit zacht soort kleurkrijt kan op een schilder-achtige wijze op papier getekend worden. Het is een dekkende techniek tussen tekenen en schilderen in. Door de subtiele tinten leent het zich goed voor portret. Het materiaal heeft een fluwelige textuur en wordt meestal op getint papier met een structuur toegepast. De olieverf kan op een klassieke wijze in dunne, gladde soms transparente lagen (‘glacis’) worden aangebracht. Edgar gebruikt de verf met meer volume – zoals de impressionisten deden – zodat de dikke penseelstreken zichtbaar blijven. In his drawings Edgar uses different types of pencils – Koh-i-noor Hardtmuth or Staedtler (hardness hB to 9B), thick woodless graphite shafts, thin refillable lead pencils and pencils that are water-soluble, Cretacolor gum– in Daler Rowney sketchbooks (160 grams cartridge paper) in A3 and A4 format. Siberian chalk. For black and white portraits in 50x65 cm format, Edgar also uses Siberian chalk (Conté à Paris). Siberian chalk is compressed charcoal that is blacker and less volatile than regular charcoal. Soft pastel. Pigment mixed with gum and water pressed into a dried stick form. This colored chalk can be used to draw on paper in more or less the same way as painting. It is a technique positioned between drawing and painting. The subtle shades make it particularly suitable for portraits. The material has a velvety texture and is usually applied to tinted paper of rough structure. Edgar uses Hahnemuller Ingres paper (48x63cm) and Canson mi-teintes (50x65cm, 160 gram) in various tones. He also uses a large range of branded products – Talens, Rowney, Unison, Toison d’Or, Jaxell, Grumbacher, Faber-Castell, Sennelier à Paris. This last brand, developed during the French impressionist period, is Edgar’s favorite. Watercolor. Transparent water color usually with bright tones. The water color is painted on special paper that is especially thick and absorbent. Most watercolorist don’t use white. For white, they leave the unpainted paper blank. Wet-in-wet technique is when colors are applied to moist paper and then spread out. Edgar uses nylon brushes, Winsor & Newton or Schminke watercolor paint in tubes and pans on 300 gram Fabriano or Arches paper (100% cotton). He also works on hand-made paper (bamboo, mulberry, cotton) from Asian countries. Oil paint. Has been used since the Middle Ages. Oil paint can be applied, in a classical way, in thin, smooth and sometimes transparent layers (‘glacis’). Edgar applies this paint heavily – like the impressionists did – in such a way that thick brushstrokes remain visible. Edgar uses bristle brushes and Talens Rembrandt, Old Holland, and Lefranc & Bourgeois oil paints on canvas. He sometimes uses canvas of mailbags as a painting support.
